Cobweb Afternoons and Other Writing From Mal Mal

An introduction from Julie Spencer (From Mallory's Memorial Service):

Mallory had this intense way with words and with expressing and putting feelings down on paper through her poetry. I wish I had Mallory's way with words and writing talents because I want what I'm about to say to be as perfect as Mallory deserves. This past summer when Mal and I would go out and see people that we haven't seen since high school, they'd ask us the normal questions that you ask when you see someone that you havent seen in a long time, "Oh, how are you, How's school, What are you planning on doing with your life after college?" And Mal's responce, so confident,was always, "I'm going to be a rock star." And she meant it. She said it so strongly and felt it so deeply that I have all the confidence in the world that she would have. The beauty of Mallory was all of her energy, her friendliness, her outgoing personality, her ability to strike up a conversation with anyone, her witty, sarcastic one liners. She could always make me laugh no matter what, no matter how I was feeling....even if she WAS making fun of me, it was hysterical and would make me feel better.

Mallory has been one of my best friends since 6th grade. I've always loved and envied her warmth and unending love that she had for everyone and everything. Every big, concrete moment that has ever happened to me, Mallory has been a part of. Growing up, discovering life, boys, cheerleading, parties, college, -we've been through so much, which is why I believe we are still so close today. I remember in high school when Mal left brighton and went to school at Penfield, I felt similar feelings of having lost my best friend and missing her so intensely. I remember being really upset one day about it after school and telling her how I couldn't stand not having her in my life everyday to share the personal jokes, life expierences, laughter and just being together.

And I remember Mallory, so strong and always knowing exactly what to say to make you feel better-she said, "Jul, no matter what, no matter where I am -Brighton Penfield, Cuba, Peru, Bali - who knows, I will never forget you or any of our friends. I will never stop loving you guys or the times we've had. I'm here for you always and forever no matter what or where I am." I think its so important for all of us to remember that. Mal is with us all always no matter what. Mallory was a great friend, a great sister, a great daughter, a great girlfriend. I think that now we all just have to remember all of those amazing things about Mallory and take them with us. Her kindness, happiness, smile and loving nature can and will stay alive/live on through all of us and our actions. There is a poem that we (Mal's friends) found in Mallory's graduation party scrapbook that we read the other day that we found to be so Mal and hits the nail on the head about who Mallory was. Its a poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson called "Success"

To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty;
To find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.

I feel that this poem was "so Mal" and everything that she was and did. I didn't get to leave anything with Mallory on Thursday because everything has been so hectic with facing this reality and making the collages and stuff, so I'm going to say now to Mal what I would have written to her if I had left her with a note.....Click Here to read it.
